Listeria samples from ill people were collected from August 6, 2020, to October 3, 2020. Ill people range in age from 40 to 89 years, with a median age of 81 years.

Of 26 people with information available, 23 have been hospitalized. Around 300 deaths in the United States are caused by Listeria infection each year, according to estimates from a 2011 CDC report. Two deaths have been reported, one from California and one from Texas. Listeria bacteria are most found in raw foods.
