CDC: Food Service Workers are a low, but not a no risk of Hepatitis A infection

A survey of state health departments experiencing person-to-person hepatitis A outbreaks during 2016–2019 demonstrated that among almost 23,000 hepatitis A outbreak cases reported from states, <4% occurred among food handlers; secondary infections among patrons accounted for 0.2% of outbreak cases ( 173 ). We compared foods implicated in outbreaks during 2007–2016 with those implicated in outbreaks during 1973–2006. Two thirds of novel foods did not require cooking after purchase. We identified 28 novel food vehicles, of which the most common types were fish, nuts, fruits, and vegetables; one third were imported.

It has nearly been six years since over 1,000 people were sickened and over 200 died from Listeria-tainted Polony in South Africa

Due to the lack of surveillance data, the baseline number of listeriosis cases was estimated from counts of listeriosis cases in 2016. It is known that in 2015 and 2016, clusters of listeriosis occurred in South Africa. Because there were only 3 cases in the 2016 cluster, researchers needed to estimate the baseline number of cases.

Outbreak appears to have begun in 2016. Listeria samples from ill people were collected from November 23, 2016 to December 13, 2019. Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development collected mushrooms for testing from a grocery store where an ill person purchased enoki mushrooms.
