The last time I was in Madrid, a friend and I perused English menus at a popular tapas joint. I requested the Spanish menu, too. As a food translator, I know that seeing the original is often the best way to decipher what’s on offer. As I salivated over old favorites, my non-Spanish-speaking friend asked, “What’s this world-famous potato dish with eggs?
Some, I am sure are a bit tired of my ranting about the FSIS doing its job and deeming Salmonella that causes human illness an adulterant in meat. Fact, after E. coli O157:H7 was deemed an adulterant in ground beef in 1994, it took about a decade for E. coli illness cases to drop. During that time, we saw the same drop in clients seeking our help. Go figure, the FSIS and the beef industry heeded my call.
Spreadsheets are a seemingly simple tool for managing bar inventory – they can be organized by storage locations, data is easy to enter, the software does the math for you, and you can quickly produce charts and graphs to aid in decision making. Not only that, but they can be free to use as well.
Making the decision to automate business processes is undeniably a good one. In a climate where staff are hard to come by, software will free up valuable time. At a time when cashflow is short, technology will boost profits and help you analyse where you can make efficiencies. And in the midst of a supply shortage, automation will allow you to change up, swap out and be able to adapt to last minute changes quickly.
Driven by a diverse and exciting ecosystem of passionate, ambitious, and often young entrepreneurs, the Food & Beverage (F&B) sector is a highly competitive environment full of immense challenges and exciting opportunities. Expert Market’s 2024 industry report, sponsored by Toast, is informed by a survey of 522 U.S. food and beverage professionals, from restaurant owners to food service managers, providing insights into the real-time challenges and opportunities within the industry.
It’s an unsavory fact: food is getting more expensive. In October, the USDA reported year-to-date averages, noting that food-at-home (grocery store) prices have increased 2.5 percent and food-away-from-home (restaurant) prices have increased 3.6 percent. If current projections from the U.S. Department of Agriculture prove accurate, this is a trend that is likely to continue—according to the forecast for 2022, food-at-home prices are expected to increase between 1.5 and 2.5 percent, a
Volume 28, Number 1—January 2022 Dispatch Salmonella Serotypes Associated with Illnesses after Thanksgiving Holiday, United States, 1998–2018. Here is the CDC’s conclusion: Salmonella Reading was the serotype most strongly associated with illness during the Thanksgiving holiday. Given the dramatic increase in turkey consumption around Thanksgiving, one might expect that serotypes we identified are primarily associated with turkey consumption, and indeed, Reading caused a multistate outbreak with
When Keyatta Mincey Parker realized that she and other restaurant and bar workers need to de-stress, she created a community garden with 501c3 status where bartenders can go and wind down. With the mission to provide a “healthy and safe space for members of the industry to recharge their creativity, minds and themselves,” the garden lets her grow as a creative person, plant new roots into the community, connect with the land and her past.

With the holiday season here, it’s time to start thinking about your marketing strategy. Christmas and New Year’s Eve provide an excellent opportunity to increase your marketing strategy, especially for restaurants and bars. During the holiday season, people look for places to spend time with their friends and family. How can you convince them to choose your restaurant?
When it comes to equipment that helps your restaurant run more efficiently, you’ve probably encountered phrases like “add this to your technology stack” or “these solutions will help simplify your restaurant.” Maybe you’re a smaller operation with less than five units in one state or a mom-and-pop operation with one location that’s been in the family for years.
Customer service starts the moment someone walks into your establishment. If your greeter fails to acknowledge the guest with a smile, that’s the start of a downward spiral that’s hard to reverse. Very often the greeter or host is doing many things (delivering drink orders, bussing tables), but the one thing they’re not doing is their main job which also happens to be the most important job in the restaurant!
Performing a restaurant renovation is a big step, but it help create a more positive and attractive environment. It’s important to recognize, though, that you shouldn’t attempt a renovation without sufficient planning. As with so many other areas of your business, your updates can significantly benefit from applying a little strategy to the process.
We’re in an unusual time when troubled supply chains are suddenly top of mind for the average American: supply chain woes have become fodder for late-night television hosts, and countless headlines warn us that we should’ve started our holiday shopping yesterday. Discussion of supply chain complexities seems to have become as common as chatting about the weather.
Because large equipment such as ice machines are designed to be in regular use, seasonal business owners and managers need to know how to winterize ice machines for the off-season. Why Winterizing Is Critical. Like a boat, an ice machine can be winterized. Prior to outlining the steps to winterizing an ice machine, it's important use proper winterizing techniques to avoid damaging the ice machine.
“HACCP: A systematic approach to the identification, evaluation, and control of food safety hazards.” – So says the FDA. Although today’s announcement (FDA Proposes Changes to Food Safety Modernization Act Rule to Enhance Safety of Agricultural Water Used on Produce) is a bit to fully digest in one sitting, I am intrigued by FDA’s focus on pre-harvest risk assessment of water risk as opposed to water testing for pathogens generally.
Goodness, it has been a crazy few years. When the pandemic hit, Marler Clark went all in to help food banks, food service workers and first responders. As the pandemic has continued (please 40% of our friends and neighbors, please get vaccinated), we have looked to other places to help. Here is were we are focused this season and we would ask others to consider the same.
