In January the Roanoke Times reported that owners of Famous Anthony’s filed bankruptcy for two of their Roanoke five restaurant locations after a hepatitis A outbreak originating from one of their food service workers killed four people, hospitalized 36, sickened 52, with one requiring a liver transplant.

CDC: Hepatitis A Deaths are vaccine preventable – it is past time to vaccinate Food Service Workers

The CDC misses the point; granted, food service workers are not more at risk of getting hepatitis A because of their occupation, but they are a risk for spreading it to customers. As of February 2, 2023, there have been a total of 44,779 cases with a 61% hospitalization rate (approximately 27,342 hospitalizations).

The food service worker who worked at three locations – Grandin Road Extension, Williamson Road and Crystal Spring Avenue – tested positive for the hepatitis a virus and contaminated customers with this human fecal virus. There certainly have been lawsuits. Perhaps they need some encouragement.

Westin Shigella Outbreak sickens 32 linked to ill food service workers

Four cases were hospitalized, and no deaths were reported. Ages ranged from 41 to 71 years (median 49.5). Seventy-two percent of cases with known information were female. Known illness onset dates ranged from August 24 to August 26, 2023. All but seven of the known cases were at least PCR positive for Shigella.
